Best example of Typesetting

Yes, this is it.  My best example of typesetting.  i actually practiced typesetting quite a little bit.  I might as well seeing as how i bought that ridiculous pica pole. I had to go to the print store by my house to get this thing, and it wasn't even new!!!  I figured it was because they don't make them anymore, i was surprised i didn't have to go to an antique mall to buy it.  Anyways, i practiced quite a bit and really tried to show off with this comp, the columns are all pretty tight and look decent.  It really didn't take that long.  I spent a decent amount of time on the image there as well.  I think it's a pretty fair marker comp.

Best Creative Concept

This is the final version of my ride poster.  I am using this piece for my best creative concept part of the final portfolio.  I really enjoyed working on this poster and thought it has a lot of things going for it.  The hardest part of the whole process was probably the mountains.  My original comp had them as sort of watercolored and sketched in, so i tried to do that in my final version, but doing that is harder than it sounds.  I ended up taking just a photograph and throwing it in the background.  the text is pretty well placed too, i believe, pretty simple and easy to read.  But why i chose it for creative concept, i thought it was just a really original idea, and was well executed.

Final Portfolio freakout!!

AAh!!!  I am really freaking out at the moment, first of all "blogger" refuses to upload my car poster, which i am using for my best creative concept part, neither that or my social dancing 2 page magazine spread, which im using for the best copyfitting part.   The lab is now offically closed so i can't try to upload them there, guess i'll try again tomorrow.  So sorry, the last two parts will be a little late!!

Remember this picture, oh yes, it's from the stress layout a while back. . .

Best Production Art

I chose my Marceline phamplet for my best production art example.  I spent quite a lot of time on this one i think i really worked my butt off on putting everything into this tiny little layout and it all ended up being very nice.  But yes, i had quite a fun time working on this layout and i think i really worked my Indesign skills as well, that's mostly why i chose this as best production art.  Because it has a solid layout, the text flows well, all the information is displayed clearly and the pictures are neatly spaced, just really enjoyed how it is layed out.

I worked on this layout so long, i wrote a song:

Singing you a song about Marceline,
It's a place i really want to be.
It's a cute as a button in the eyes of everyone who ever layed their eyes on Marceline.
When you come around exploring, Marceline will never ever be boring,
there's lot's to see in Marceline.

Best InDesign work

This is what i chose for my best inDesign layout, yes it is the health and wellness phamphlet.  Thank you for noticing!  No, sorry it is not the Marceline phamplet.  I really enjoyed working on this layout, i learned a lot, mostly about spot color, but i also aplied my knowledge of columns and flowing text to this.  The links are all TIFFs WOW!!  I think it really demonstrates my knowledge of the program.

Best Photoshop work

This is by far my best example of work in photoshop, not that we really did much in photoshop anyways, but this is the best.  I used a lot of tools in this one such as the clone stamp tool, dodge, burn, airbrush, and spot heal tool.  I think it's a good display of my talents in photoshop,

Best Illustraror work

Shocking im sure, but yes, i used my car as my best illustrator piece.  why?  I'll tell you, i believe this piece really shows off all of my skills in Illustrator.  I had to use just about every tool to make this: pen tool, gradient mesh, changed transparency just to name a few.  I did put a lot of hours into this and i really like it, and think it really shows what can be done with a program like illustrator.

Best Marker Comp/Typesetting/design

Hands down, my best marker comp.  I love this one, it was for the chili cook off, and it was the full size comp we were supposed to do.  I spent hours inking each and every line, fitting the type in so neatly.  It was a real pain in the butt, drawing those lines and actually going in with brush and ink to give it a nice look and sharpness.  Oh, i will let you know, this took me 5 hours to mark up. . .

I also believe this falls under the category for best typesetting, the type falls into place quite nicely under the little lightning bolt things, which is actually the reason i chose this one for best design as well.  I think the bolts do a good job at pointing out the central image, but do an excellent job of seperating the text into a heiarchy.  The most important things are on top, and work your way down to the lesser important things.

Best Thumbnail Comps

This is the piece i have selected for my best thumbnails, i believe i had a variety of good layouts while sticking to a central idea/concept.  and even though they may all seem pretty similar, i really put forth a good effort to make as many different ideas out of this car show as possible.  I took inspiration from all over the place.  Mine would end up being the top left one, just FYI.  Although i was always partial to the bottom right one.

Social Dancing, final art

This is my final art for the social dancing 2-page magazine spread.  It turned out a lot better than i thought it would have!!  I'm really glad i chose to use a two column layout on the second page as well i think it looks a lot better than just a big block of type.  The first page was a little stale, and i looked for another image or a pull quote, but the internet's a little empty and the copy itself was pretty boring and had nothing pull quote worthy, so that's that. But, yes, all and all i thought it was a pretty solid layout, easy to read, good flowing text and a pretty good image to compliment the article.

Marceline Comps

So, these are my Marceline pamphlet scans, i really had the same idea for all of them so they are not all that original.  I was focusing on the path the reader's eye would take when they picked up the phamplet.  I actually made little dummies of all the phamplets, that's why the scans may look a little funny.  I think making the dummies helped a lot in seeing how the final product would end up looking.  The middle one will be taken into production.  It will not include the middle horizontal fold however and will be a roll fold. That is all about these, i would also like to add, i did not like making them AT ALL!!!!

Auto Show Poster

This is the half size marker comp for my "ride" poster.  The mountains did not come out as nice as I would've liked them too, and don't even get me started on the car.  I can't draw a car to save my life!  It was suggested to me during review of these comps that the "Classic Auto Show" text be bannered across the top, and the date and location remain where they are.  I thought it was a pretty good suggestion, but the person going over my original should've suggested it, or picked another poster with that idea.  This was the only problem I had with this particular poster, the wide open space up in the top left corner.  I will be playing around with this when I am working up the final design on the computer.
The final poster will probably have the car a little higher, the mountains will be slightly higher too as well as filled in more.  the mountains look really good close up, the marker made an interesting texture.  I would like to see this texture larger, so people far away can see it better.  I will either blow this drawing up or perhaps play around with watercolors and then scan those images in.  And as much as I would like to change the text, i really can't do much.  I will make up a copy of what the poster would look like if the auto show text were to be placed on the top; but i think i will be making enough slight moderations, that the empty space up top will disappear.

Car Poster Comps

Here are my ten comps of my car poster.  I had a bunch of ideas, but i ended up liking the Classic Car Show the best, and so i just stuck with it through the majority of my sketches and all of these comps.  Since it was a car show i knew it would probably be in some center somewhere, so i just picked a cool city and gave it a name.  I think Colorado was a good choice, because then i started playing around with the idea of mountains in the background.  The top left design was chosen to be my final design, and i'm not complaining because i really enjoyed that one.   The person who reviewed my comps said it had some good balance.  The use of color in my comps is almost non existant because i went to do my comps with black markers in hand and then it hit me.  I gathered up some colors and started to work.  First of all i can't draw a car to save my life, so i drew some nice outlined cars in the same color as the real thing.  As for the mountains, i hinted at there appearance.  I think this poster would look good made up with water colors, or at least the mountains.  Well, i now know what im working on, time to get to work. . .

Chili Cook Off Poster

Well, here it is, my chili cook off poster.  I was no walk in the park, well just a short walk.  Laying this guy out was no fun and inking him was even more of a hassle.  Once completed, i mounted and then scanned it in.  Made the chili pepper and bolts in illustrator, and than layed out the text in InDesign.  No doubt i'll probably forget to turn in those files for some time, maybe i'll just set this as my homepage so i can't forget!!!
Ah, what a fun poster.  I didn't really want to do this one, it was mostly just filler.  But now that ive been FORCED to do it, i really like it.  the title text is so fun!!  The "bolts" were fun to make and look pretttty coool!!!  I wish i could've done more with the rest of the text, but i only have so much space to work with.

Chili poster critique

I thought this design followed all of the parameters of the assignment: no bleed, appropriate illustrations, and even though no information is given in the comp. it can easily fit into this layout.
The first thing i noticed about this design was that the title was missing, it instead had a big attention getter: "got chili?"  I thought it was pretty effective in terms of getting attention, but then what are people supposed to do?  the actual name of the event is absent, if it were placed under the attention getter, i think it would work a lot better.
Another thing that really caught my eye was the illustrations.  I thought they worked really well.  Also, the placement of text and illustrations gives the reader some direction, the text slides from the top left to bottom right.  It's just very easily understandable and the illustrations are fun to look at.
The only thing left to mention is the lack of text in the comp.  It isn't really a big issue, i guess i just would've like to have seen it in here to know exactly where everything is going to go.  But since there is space blocked out, type can be easily placed in those areas.
So all in all, i enjoyed this design, it would be awesome with a few tweaks here and there, hope the final thing looks good!

Helvitica: Friend, Foe, or Font?

Finally remembering to write about the film we watched: "Helvitica"  I can honestly say that i liked it.  It was a pretty straightforward documentary, but it was funny, insightful and really appealed to my interests.  I really thought it was amazing how much around me uses that, it's a pretty plain font, my eye just passes over it.  Really effective in giving directions and for use in street signs.
